W 2006 roku talent Florence został odkryty przez Mairead Nash (przyszłą menadżerkę Flo), na jednej z organizowanych przez nią imprez Queens of Noize, kiedy to Flo zaśpiewała w toalecie utwór Etty James „Something’s Got A Hold On Me”.
Oficjalne powstanie zespołu Florence and the Machine datuje się na 2007 rok. Początkowa nazwa grupy była żartem i miała brzmieć Florence Robot/Isa Machine, jednak okazało się, że jest zbyt długa, dzięki czemu Flo pozostała przy skrócie ‘and the Machine’.
W sierpniu zespół wystąpił podczas pierwszej, debiutanckiej edycji festiwalu 1-2-3-4 Shoreditch Festival
2008 rok to pierwsza poważna trasa dla Florence + the Machine, jako support amerykańskiej grupy MGMT, co pozwoliło im wystąpić na bocznych scenach największych festiwali, takich jak Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds, czy Bestival.
W tym samym roku ukazał się pierwszy singiel Florence + the Machine „Kiss With A Fist”, który znalazł się na 51. miejscu na listach przebojów w Wielkiej Brytanii.
Kolejnym singlem promującym album Lungs został utwór „Dog Days Are Over”. Cieszył się większym sukcesem, ponieważ dwukrotnie zdobył status platynowej płyty w USA, gdzie znalazł się na 21. miejscu na liście Billboard Hot 100.
28 kwietnia 2009 roku zespół wydał swoją pierwszą EPkę zatytułowaną „A Lot of Love. A Lot of Blood”, na której znajdowały się takie hity jak Dog Days Are Over, Kiss With A Fist oraz cover zespołu Cold War Kids z piosenką „Hospital Beds”.
W 2009 przed wydaniem debiutanckiego albumu, Florence + the Machine otrzymali prestiżową nagrodę Critics’ Choice Award przyznawaną przez Brit Awards, co uczyniło ich najbardziej obiecującym i wyczekiwanym zjawiskiem przyszłego roku.
6 lipca 2009 roku został wydany pierwszy studyjny album „Lungs”, który znalazł się na szczycie UK Album Charts, zdobył status kilkakrotnej platynowej płyty w Wielkiej Brytanii, status platynowej płyty przypadł natomiast w Irlandii, Australii, USA, jak i w Polsce. Album sprzedał się w nakładzie ponad 3,000,000 kopii na całym świecie.
W 2009 roku zespół został nagrodzony m.in. przez Mercury Prize, UK Festival Awards oraz UK Music Video Awards
Podczas Brit Awards 2010, Florence wraz z Dizzee Rascalem wykonała utwór „You’ve Got The Dirtee Love”, który zdobył 2. miejsce na liście UK Singles Chart. Ten sam utwór był jeszcze kilkakrotnie wykonywany przez duet, m.in podczas festiwalu Glastonbury w 2010 roku na Pyramid Stage.
W tym samym roku został wydany utwór Heavy In Your Arms, który pojawił się na ścieżce dźwiękowej do filmu Saga „Zmierzch”: Zaćmienie
Przełomowym wydarzeniem w karierze Florence była nominacja do MTV Video Music Awards za teledysk do utworu Dog Days Are Over oraz występ na gali, który zapoczątkował fascynację zespołem w całej Ameryce. Dzień po tym wydarzeniu Florence Welch była najczęściej wpisywaną osobą w wyszukiwarce Google na całym świecie! (sama twierdzi, że ten fakt jest najbardziej przerażającą i przytłaczającą rzeczą, o której stara się nigdy nie myśleć).
W czerwcu Florence + the Machine wystąpili na festiwalu Glastonbury, gdzie grali już od 2007 roku na najmniejszych scenach , jednak umiejscowienie zespołu na Other Stage było czymś przełomowym, ponieważ na tę scenę przyciągnęli do siebie jeden z największych tłumów w historii całego festiwalu! Podczas koncertu Flo ze wzruszeniem powiedziała „Jest to dla mnie ogromna chwila. Zaczynaliśmy od grania w namiotach, a teraz jesteśmy tutaj… To naprawdę wiele znaczy być na tej scenie, przed Wami wszystkimi. Nigdy nie chce Was opuścić”/ „This is a pretty big moment for me. To start in a tent and then be here… it means a lot to be on this stage in front of you. I never want to leave”.
2010 rok przyniósł zespołowi wiele nagród za debiutancki album „Lungs”. W rękach Florence znalazła się m.in statuetka Brit Awards w kategorii ‘MasterCard British Album of the Year’, Q Awards ‘Best Female Artist’ oraz ‘Best Track’, Meteor Music Awards “Best International Band” i “Musician of the Year”.
Swoją pierwszą nominację do najważniejszej muzycznej nagrody – Grammy Awards, zespół otrzymał w 2011 roku, w kategorii Best New Artist
W lipcu zakończyła się trasa promująca album Lungs, podczas której zespół zagrał 257 koncertów na całym świecie.
W czasie jednego z pokazów Chanel prezentującego kolekcję Spring/Summer 2012 w obecności Karla Lagerfelda, Florence wykonała utwór What The Water Gave Me, świetnie uzupełniając podwodny motyw pokazu.
31 października 2011 roku odbyła się światowa premiera drugiego studyjnego albumu Florence + the Machine “Ceremonials”, który znalazł się na samym szczycie listy UK Albums Chart oraz sprzedał w nakładzie ok. 100 tysięcy kopii w pierwszym tygodniu od wydania.
Spośród 12 utworów, które znalazły się na płycie, aż pięć zostało singlami promującymi album: What The Water Gave Me, Shake It Out, No Light No Light, Never Let Me Go, Spectrum, Lover To Lover.
Pierwszym i jedynym w dotychczasowej karierze Florence singlem, który zdobył pierwsze miejsce na liście UK Singles Chart i Irish Singles Chart został utwór „Spectrum” zremiksowany przez Calvina Harrisa.
W 2012 roku FATM zdobyli dwie nominacje do nagrody BRIT Awards: British Female Solo Artist oraz Mastercard British Album of the Year “Ceremonials”. Zespół otrzymał również nominację do MTV Europe Music Awards jako ‘Best Alternative’.
Florence + the Machine zdobyli statuetkę NME Awards za Najlepszy Utwór “Shake It Out” oraz dwukrotną wygraną w kategorii Best Solo Artist.
5 kwietnia odbyła się premiera drugiego koncertowego albumu Florence + the Machine, tym razem z serii MTV Unplugged. Koncert został nagrany w 2011 roku w Nowym Jorku i zawiera dwa covery: ‘Try A Little Tenderness’ oraz ‘Jackson’ w duecie z Joshem Hommem.
26 kwietnia 2012 został wydany utwór Breath of Life na potrzeby filmu „Królewna Śnieżka i Łowca”.
Przy kolejnej współpracy Florence z Calvinem Harrisem powstał singiel „Sweet Nothing”, który został umieszczony na albumie brytyjskiego DJ’a oraz znalazł się na szczycie listy UK Singles Chart.
W grudniu Florence + The Machine zostali nominowani do dwóch nagród Grammy Awards 2013 „Best Pop Vocal Album” za Ceremonials oraz „Best Pop Duo/Group Performance” za utwór „Shake It Out.
12 grudnia 2012 roku podczas koncertu w Dublinie zespół świętował oficjalne zakończenie trasy Ceremonials, która trwała od 13 października 2011 roku i objęła 126 koncertów na całym świecie.
Podczas zapowiedzianej przerwy między trzecim albumem, Florence zagrała na trzech festiwalach, w tym po długim czasie odwiedziła Polskę na (Coke) Live Music Festival, który był jej jedynym europejskim koncertem w 2013 roku.
W kwietniu odbyła się premiera piosenki „Over The Love”, która znalazła się na soundtracku filmu „Wielki Gatsby”.
In 2006, Florence’s talent was discovered by Mairead Nash (her future manager), it happened during a party organised by Queens of Noize – Flo followed Mairead into the toilets, took a huge chance and belted out Etta James’ Something’s Got a Hold on Me.
Official rise of Florence + the Machine is dated on 2007. Band first performed for a time under the name Florence Robot/Isa Machine before shortening it to Florence + the Machine as it was felt to be kind of joke.
In August, FATM performed at the first and debut edition of the 1-2-3-4 Shoreditch Festival.
In 2008, took place the first real FATM tour, they supported MGMT on tour in Europe and this led to them playing music festivals, including Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds and Bestival.
In the same year a first single of Florence + the Machine – „Kiss With A Fist” was released and it reached #51 on the UK Singles Chart.
Follow-up single from Lungs was „Dog Days Are Over”, which was much more succeed – it was certified double platinum in USA and reached #21 on the Billboard Hot 100
28 April 2009, FATM released their first EP entitled „A Lot of Love. A Lot of Blood”, which included Dog Days Are Over, Kiss With A Fist and a cover version of Cold War Kids song „Hospital Beds”.
In 2009, before the release of their debut album, Florence + the Machine had won the Critic’s Choice Award at the BRIT Awards, which made them the most promising and awaited phenomenon of next year.
6 July 2009, Florence + the Machine released their first studio album Lungs in the United Kingdom, which debuted at number two on the UK Album Chart, was certified multiplatinum in UK and was certified platinum in Ireland, Australia, USA and in Poland as well. Lungs has sold more than three million copies worldwide.
In 2009, the band received Mercury Prize, UK Festival Award and UK Music Video Award.
At the 2010 BRIT Awards Florence and the Machine and Dizzee Rascal performed a mashup, entitled „You Got the Dirtee Love”. The recorded performance was subsequently released as a single and reached #2 on the UK Singles Chart. The duo performed the mashup several times, including Glastonbury Festival in 2010 on the Pyramid Stage.
In the same year, FATM released track called Heavy In Your Arms for the soundtrack to The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.
The big moment, when Florence and the Machine broke into American pop consciousness, was stunning live performance of „Dog Days Are Over” at MTV Video Music Awards and also nomination to this award (for Dog Days Are Over video). As a result, only one day after, Florence + the Machine became the number-one search on Google worldwide! (Flo says this fact is the most frightening and overwhelming thing and she tries to never think about it).
In June, FATM played at the Glastonbury Festival (where they were performing on the smallest stages since 2007) on the Other Stage and their performance drew one of the biggest crowds of the day and one of the biggest in the Other Stage’s history! During the gig Flo with deep emotion said „This is a pretty big moment for me. To start in a tent and then be here… it means a lot to be on this stage in front of you. I never want to leave”.
2010 brought to the band many awards for their debut album Lungs, including MasterCard British Album award at the 2010 BRIT Awards, Best Female Artist at the Q Awards, Best Track, Meteor Music Award, Best International Band, Musician of the Year.
In 2011, at the 53rd Grammy Awards Florence and the Machine were nominated for Best New Artist
Tour supported album Lungs ended in July 2011, after 257 gigs worldwide.
Florence emerged at the Chanel Spring/Summer 2012 show and performed as the closing styles paraded across the runway, in the presence of Karl Lagerfeld and all the audience, song What The Water Gave Me.
The band’s second studio album, Ceremonials, was released on 31 October 2011. It reached number one on the UK Albums Chart and has sold 105,000 units in its opening week.
Six singles were released from Ceremonials (from among 12 songs): What The Water Gave Me, Shake It Out, No Light No Light, Never Let Me Go, Spectrum, Lover To Lover.
“Spectrum”, fuelled by a remix by Calvin Harris, became the group’s first (and to date one and only) single to peak at number one on the UK Singles Chart and on the Irish Singles Chart.
In 2012, Florence + the Machine were nominated for two Brit Awards (British Female Solo Artist and Mastercard British Album of the Year for “Ceremonials” ) and MTV Europe Music Awards in Best Alternative.
Florence + the Machine won NME Award in the category for Best Track for “Shake It Out” and in the category for Best Solo Artist twice.
On 5 April 2012 took place a premiere of the second live Florence + the Machine album, which was a part of the MTV Unplugged series. The album was filmed in 2011 in New York City and contains two covers: Try A Little Tenderness and Jackson with Josh Homme
On 26 April 2012, the band released “Breath of Life”, a song which was recorded as the official theme song for the film Snow White and the Huntsman
A result of second time collaboration Florence with Calvin Harris was song “Sweet Nothing”, which was released as a single from Harris’s album. The song entered at number one on the UK Singles Chart.
In December, Florence + the Machine were nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album for Ceremonials and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for „Shake It Out” at the 2013 Grammy Awards.
On 12 December 2012, during a gig in Dublin, the band celebrated an official end of The Ceremonials Tour, after two years of worldwide touring and played in total 126 shows.
In February 2013 (during band’s hibernation linked with work on third album) it was announced that Florence + the Machine would be playing at 3 festivals more, including Coke Live Music Festival in Poland, which was one and only FATM gig in Europe in 2013
In April 2013, took place a premiere of a song, for Baz Luhrmann’s film The Great Gatsby, titled „Over the Love”
